This is an image from the 2009 film watchmen which was directed by Zack Snyder, I have chosen to do an image of this film because it is one of my favourite films and it has some interesting themes throughout, in terms of psychoanalysis and feminism. The film is set in an alternate 1985 where former so called superheroes exist, When the comedian (Front right) is murdered, vigilante Rorschach decides to have his own investigation and uncovers something that could change history.
If you just take the image as it is, psychoanalysts will initially notice Rorschach (Front left) because he is wearing a mask that shows the Rorschach test which is a test used by psychoanalysts in which subjects look at inkblots and give their perceptions of what it looks like to determine psychological state. But in this case for someone to be wearing an Inkblot mask, this obviously indicates he doesn’t want his identity to be known, which is understandable as most superheroes do this. It also might indicate deep seeded physiological problems from a traumatic event that has occurred in his part whilst seeing a psychiatrist. He has most likely seen a psychiatrist in the past that will have used this test on him and it may have stuck in his mind that it was a test he didn’t like and didn’t like what he perceived while doing the test. This is maybe why he chooses to wear this Rorschach mask because he wants the criminals to see the perceptions he saw and feared and to make them afraid like they make the victims of their crimes, to give them a taste of what they do. It could also be a form of protection and that he feels safe while wearing this mask and projecting his fears into other people rather than towards himself. Another thing you notice when looking at Rorschach is that his hands are in his pockets and his head is down and turned away from the audience, this could indicate that he is very reserved person and does not like to open up to other people which links with him not liking the psychiatrists tests.
The comedian also isn’t looking at the audience in this image; he is looking down and at his gun whilst smoking a cigar. I also think this shows that he doesn’t like to show emotion and open up but his body is facing towards the camera whilst smoking his cigar which makes him look quite smug. He seems to hold his gun quite affectionately like it is the only thing he loves in the world which indicates he is a very violent person and only feels comfortable whilst in violence. With me knowing the film and knowing the characters names it is ironic this character being known as the comedian because you imagine a comedian as being a funny light-hearted person who wouldn’t harm anyway, Whereas this character is the opposite of that description and is a very violent and volatile character.
In contrast Nite owl (Middle) is facing the audience directly in a confident domineer even though he does have his arms crossed, which in basic body language terms seems held back. In this image he in my opinion is the only one who looks like a stereotypical superhero and looks like he is a good guy. I think this is because apart from Dr. Manhattan (Back) he is the only one who is looking at and facing the audience which makes him look more righteous.
At the first glance of this image you just think it’s a bunch of superheroes all on the same side. But when you look closer you notice that Adrian, who is the character at the back but in front of Dr. Manhattan, is looking towards the four superheroes in front of him. His appearance makes him look like he is with them, but with him being behind them and the sinister look towards them makes you think otherwise. At the very back is Dr. Manhattan who seems to be looking over all of them with his godly presence and with him being taller and above everyone makes him seem all knowing. He seems like he is a part of the group but is very distance with the way he isn’t looking at anyone but the audience.
If you look at the image as a whole, the background is obviously a big city and it is raining and during the night. This could easily be a group of villains because it is the sort of setting you imagine them to be in or it’s just that these superheroes aren’t valued or worshiped by the public. The rain indicates bad times and you get a dark sinister vibe from it.
The only female character in the image is the Silk spectre who is wearing tight leather provocative clothes. It seems very stereotypical of a film to have the only female character dressed like this because it is a sex symbol for men and it is the thing that will initially catch the male eye. Her body language shows that she is faced towards Nite owl which could indicate that there is some sort of relationship there between them. But because she isn’t facing him could show that it is a secret relationship and they want no one to know about it.
