This is the raw flythrough footage I made for my presentation, I may edit it in the future..
These are a few beauty shots of my final map/environment in UDK which I submitted for my year 2 self initiated project..
I may carry on the project because I feel I could of made it look much better with some extra assets, different buildings and improved lighting. I might bring it into Unreal Engine 4 to compare how it looks.
Other games with the same medieval style environment I’ve been looking into for my project.
- Assassins Creed
- Fable Series
- Dragon Age: Origins
- The Witcher Series
Assassins Creed is the first in a series of historical action adventure games set in an open world environment, developed by Ubisoft and released for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (2007) and Microsoft Windows (2008). I’ve looked into the first Assassins Creed because it is set during the third crusade which is the medieval era so it would be good for asset ideas and how the general environment is populated. I played the Xbox 360 version (Completed).
Fable is a series of action role playing games developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. Although fable’s art style is more stylized it is still valuable to research because they are set in fantasy environments with a medieval theme but do advance with each game. I played Fable 1 on PC and Fable 2 and 3 on Xbox 360 (Completed 2 and 3).
Dragon Age: Origins..
Dragon Age: Origins is a role playing game developed by Bioware and published by Electronic Arts, It was released in 2009. Dragon Age: Origins even though more of a fantasy setting still has a medieval theme so is useful for asset ideas and architecture. Played the Xbox 360 version (Completed)
The Witcher Series..
The Witcher is a series of hack and slash role playing games based on a book series by polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, developed by CD Projekt RED and published by Atari, Inc. The Witcher takes place in a medieval fantasy setting so again is useful for asset ideas. Played The Witcher 1 on PC and The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360 (3 hours The Witcher, 10 hours The Witcher 2).

Just a quick update on where I am with my self initiated project, I’m basically just producing assets.
The assets aren’t looking as good as I’d like and I will go back to them at the end if I have time but with little time left I’ve needed to just start producing. Next I will produce a few more simple assets then move onto creating a modular building kit, which I should of done first really.
I looked at some of the architecture in the map Stoneshill on Chivalry Medieval Warfare because it’s a similar look and design to what I have been planning, here are some screenshots I got..
I like the variations in wooden support beams, especially in the first image as it’s a none uniform design and looks like it’s been rushed or built by someone who wasn’t a builder.
A slightly larger building with a different style of roof adds some variation to the environment.
