Whilst looking into some environment artists that work for Naughty Dog I came across this cool little question and answer session where students asked the naughty dog team some questions. Which can be found here.
There where quite a lot a questions so won’t show them all even though there all relevent but here are some of the more interesting and useful ones:
Q: What stands out to you guys when reviewing portfolios
A: We like to see a focus on the big picture and an attention to detail, in addition to a good understanding of art concepts.
Q: What do you look for in a demo reel?
A: Only put in your strongest pieces… a demo reel is only as good as the weakest part.
Q: How important is drawing skill?
A: Can be foundational. Most (but not all!) environment artists I know, started out drawing like crazy. It teaches you to deconstruct the world, so you can recreate it.
Q: How do you get the experience to apply? Do you just build up a portfolio?
A: Little secret: having an awesome portfolio is much more important than having experience. If you can pass the art test, that’s half the battle already.
