Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
The next game I played in the studio was Call of Duty Black Ops 2, I think most people will know this series as it’s one of the biggest game series ever I would say and defiantly the most well known first person shooter at the moment. I’ve played quite a few games in the series and had played this one before so knew the map layouts whilst playing which gave me a bit of an advantage over my opponent as we was playing one vs one’s. Personally I don’t enjoy Call of Duty games anymore because they bring out one every year and they’ve just got a bit boring in my opinion.
As for the categories it falls into, It’s definitely competitive as it’s main attraction is online multiplayer with emphases on leaderboards and kill to death ratio’s. It also includes mimicry as you are controlling a soldier and illinx because of flash and stun grenades blurring your vision and also blood splatter and your screen when you take damage.
I didn’t reach flow whilst playing CoD because I don’t really enjoy the game so it’s difficult to ‘get into it’ so to speak. I would say I was in a state of boredom on the flow diagram because as I stated previously I do not enjoy the Call of Duty series anymore.
Mario Kart 64.
The final game I played in the studio with everyone was Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64, this was one of my favourite games when I was younger but I don’t properly remember playing it so was looking forward to it. We played it 4 player competitive so was good to be trying to beat the people sitting around you, ups the competition. The controls are very simple with a accelerate button, brake/reverse button, power up use button and power slide button, these are the only controls you use but it’s an awesome game.
I think it falls into to all of Caillois game categories, obviously agon because you are racing against other players to win. Alea comes into it because you pick up power ups that are random so it’s down to chance what you get, illinx because of the fast paced gameplay which can make it difficult to know where you are, and mimicry because you are controlling someone like Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi and being a cart racer in the process.
I was in flow whilst I was playing because I was unaware what was going on around me and just fully concentrating on what was happening in the game, if someone was stood right behind me I would not of realized. I think it helped that I was playing against my peers because it made me more competitive.
