The Elder Scrolls Presentation
Firstly in my presentation I will introduce which games I will be talking about, they are;
- The Elder Scrolls: Arena
- The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
After this I will give a general introduction to what the series is, it’s a series of open world epic fantasy action role playing games created by Bethesda softworks. All the games take place on the continent of Tamriel, just in different provinces. All the games in the series allow the player to do what they like and do not have to play the main story line if they don’t want to.
I will start by talking about arena and that it was released in 1994 for DOS and on CD-ROM and 3.5 floppy discs. Then I will speak about how it wasn’t originally going to be an RPG and how it was just going to be a gladiator fighting game until more side quests and RPG elements came into the game. I will also talk about it having a huge open world and that when it was first released it was almost impossible to complete which wouldn’t be acceptable for a game released now.
I then go on to talk about Daggerfall the 2nd game in the series, which was released in 1996. The main point I want to get across when speaking about this is the scale of the game. It is the 2nd largest world in the series, 161,600 square kilometres (63,125 square miles) — roughly half the size of Great Britain. It also has 750,000+ non-player characters (NPCs) for the player to interact with which shows the scale but it’s all randomly generated so there isn’t loads of detail.
After I will move onto Morrowind, which was released in 2002 and was the first to be released for consoles. With this game been released 6 years after the previous game there is a vast improvement in graphics and this is what I will mainly speak about because it has a different engine the direct 3D powered engine. I will also speak about how the series changed from the world been huge to it being smaller and more detailed.
Next I will talk about the 4th game in the series Oblivion that was released in 2006 and is the first one to be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I will introduce the character creation system while speaking about this because even though it’s in all the games it’s most detailed in this one (Apart from Skyrim). I will also speak about the radiant AI and how it improved the NPC’s from Morrowind because they where criticized.
Finally I will end my presentation by talking about the most recent game in the series Skyrim which was released in 2011. The Skyrim world is 16 square miles the same as oblivion but it seems much bigger because the terrain is much more difficult to traverse and takes longer to get to places. I will talk about the detail they put into Skyrim by having everything handcrafted unlike the beginning of the series where they went for scale and not much detail. I will also talk about how important dragons are to Skyrim and how the new engine has giving the game some nice detailed graphics.
