We watched one episode of a century of the self in a CAT’s session and these are a series of documentaries about Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud and Edward Bernays. We only watched the first episode (Happiness Machines) but I found it interesting. It was mainly about Edward Bernays and how he used his uncle’s theories (Sigmund Freud) to control the American public during the 20th century. Edward Bernays was a pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, one of his most famous campaigns was when he was hired by the smoking companies to make it socially acceptable for women to smoke in public which was acceptable at the time they where only allowed to smoke in designated area’s. He did this by labelling cigarettes as ‘Torches of freedom’ and during a parade he got female models to smoke while in the parade which got onto the news and more and more women started smoking in public which made it become socially acceptable.
In this documentary it also showed many of his campaigns to control the public and also that he was hired by the president at the time Calvin Coolidge to make him more popular and not seem boring by getting him in the media. He has been named one of the most influential Americans of the 20th century because of his influence on the public during this time.
